Sakai Selected for UVa's Course Management System

In Fall 2007, Sakai—an open-source online collaboration and learning environment running at UVa as UVaCollab—was selected to replace the homegrown Instructional Toolkit as UVa’s new course management system.

Timeline for Transition

Spring 2008
  • UVaCollab went into production for course sites, including integration with ISIS class roster data
  • Early adopter facutly began transitioning from Instructional Toolkit to UVaCollab
  • Official student photos were added to UVaCollab (composite photos available only in Toolkit)
Summer 2008 through Spring 2009
  • More instructors continue transitioning from Instructional Toolkit to UVaCollab for courses
  • Ongoing upgrades and integration of features and capabilities, including PeopleSoft
  • Library scanning requests transfer scanned materials into UVaCollab or Toolkit
Summer 2009
  • UVaCollab is in full production for courses and integrated with PeopleSoft
  • Last semester that final grade submissions and course evaluations are handled through Toolkit; the new student system comes fully online in Fall 2009
  • Instructional Toolkit is “retired” to read-only mode
