Your Email and Mailing Lists

[Jun 28, 2008 8:06] Email phishing scam targeting WebMail users has been reported. More Information

Scan the answers to the frequently-asked questions below to learn about disposition of your U.Va. email and mailing lists before you leave the University.
What will happen to my email messages and aliases?
All messages, aliases, etc. on an account are removed from the system when the account expires and you will no longer have access to them. You must move them before the account expires. You should notify your correspondents of your new address before your account expires: messages that are delivered after your account expires will be returned to their sender with a 'user unknown' message.
I have heard that U.Va. is offering permanent email accounts to students now. How does this work?
The Alumni Association, University, and ITC offer a lifetime forwarding alias via HoosOnline, the web community for Alumni use. By adding 'alumni' to your current email address (e.g., mst3k@alumni.virginia.edu) your friends will reach you without having to research your post-Uva email account, wherever it will be (please note, it will not be on an ITC computer unless you remain a student, faculty or staff of U.Va.) For the latest updates on HoosOnline and a more complete description of its services, visit the Alumni Association website at: https://hoosonline.virginia.edu/home.asp.
How can I access my email account while I'm away for the summer?
If you will be away from Charlottesville, you can access your U.Va. Central Mail Service e-mail account using your web browser and the Web Mail service. To access Web Mail, go to https://www.mail.virginia.edu. For more information about remote access to email, including to U.Va. accounts not on the Central Mail Service, please visit http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/email/remote-access.html.
I will be studying abroad next year. What will happen to my account?
If you are participating in a University-sponsored study-abroad program, your U.Va. registration information will remain active, as will your account. If you are participating in a program that is sponsored by another University, check with the people sponsoring the program and your Dean/department. If your registration will remain active in the U.Va. database, ITC will maintain your account. If your registration will not remain active, you should contact ITC to explain the situation and petition to have your account remain current. You should contact accounts@virginia.edu.
I subscribe to one or more mailing lists. What should I do about this?
Instructions on how to remove yourself from either a Mailman or a listserv mailing list can be found at http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/email/mailing-lists/
I own a mailing list that is here at UVa. What will happen to it?
Mailing lists need to be owned by current members of the UVa community. You will need to find someone here to assume ownership of the list. Information on how to transfer list ownership to someone else can be found at http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/email/mailing-lists/mm-owner-duties.html#transfer
