SPSS 17 Installation Instructions

SPSS 17 is now available via download from the ITC Software Licensing Website. SPSS 17 for Windows works on Windows XP & Vista. SPSS 17 for Macintosh works on both Power PC and Intel processors.

Availability of Licenses and Media

Students may not install SPSS 17 on personal computers. For lab use, staff or faculty must license and install SPSS 17. Eligible users are encouraged to download SPSS 17 from the ITC Software Licensing Website. If there are extenuating circumstances that necessitate you obtain a CD for installation, we will provide you with a copy by special request. Please contact either the Research Computing Lab or the Scholars' Lab.

Before installing SPSS 17

  1. Go to the ITC Software Licensing Website, and log in through NetBadge.
  2. Scroll down to Licenses Available. Select SPSS 17 for your operating system, Windows or Mac, and click Submit
  3. If you are staff or faculty, an entry for SPSS 17 for Windows or Mac (whichever you are trying to license) will appear in the Current Licenses section on the left side of the blue page. (Students may not license SPSS from the Software Licensing Website.)
  4. In the License Actions section on the right side of the page, select Review EULA & Change Licensing Info, and click Submit
  5. Carefully read the End User License Agreement (EULA) for SPSS 17.0, enter the required information, and click Submit
  6. You will return to the Summary of Current Licenses page. On the right side of the blue web page select Access License Codes & Program Files, and click Submit
  7. You will be sent to the SPSS 17.0 License Codes, Utilities, and Program Files web page.

Installation Using Download

  1. Please follow steps 1 through 7, above. When you "Access License Codes & Program Files", you will gain access to three important items:
    • The file to download (.exe for Windows, .zip for Mac)
    • The Authorization Code for SPSS Version 17 (20 digits long; this is used during the License Authorization Wizard)
    • The Serial Number (8 digits long; this is used when you install SPSS on your computer after download)
  2. Click the SPSS17 Download File link
    • Select Save File - Remember where your downloaded files are stored!
    • Downloading this file may take some time based on your connection speed. The file is approximately 800 MB in size
  3. Windows: The file should open automatically once it is downloaded. If this does not happen, open your downloads folder, find the downloaded file, and double click it.
  4. Macintosh: Unzip the file and run the SPSS Statistics Installer.
  5. You must agree to the terms and conditions of the software. Failure to do so will terminate installation. If you agree to the terms, click OK The file will self-extract onto your computer.
  6. The Installation will start, and the SPSS Installation Splash Page will appear.
  7. Select Install SPSS and the installation wizard will initialize.
  8. On the Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for SPSS 17 page, select the second choice: Site License.
    • Do not select Single user or Network License. If you select this choice, you will not be able to run SPSS.
    • Click Next >
  9. On the License Agreement page, select I accept the terms in this license agreement after reading the license agreement. Click Next>
    • If you don't accept the terms of the license agreement, installation will stop.
  10. On the Read Me information page, click Next>
  11. On the Customer Information page, enter:
    • Your full name
    • Your organization (e.g., UVa Department of Mathematics)
    • The Serial Number, which is the shorter (8 digit) number you obtained from the same page as the program file on the ITC Software Licensing Website
    • Click Next>
  12. On the Destination Folder page, accept the default folder that SPSS selects, and click Next>
  13. On the Ready to install page, click Install
  14. The program will start installing. Depending on your computer system, installation may take quite a long time.
  15. On the License and Register SPSS 17 page, select Get a License Now. Do not enable a temporary license, as it will expire shortly.
  16. The License Authorization Wizard splash page will appear. Click Start
  17. Select the first choice: Use Authorization via Internet to get License. Do not select any other choices. You must be connected to the Internet to obtain a license.
  18. The Authorization Code is the longer (20 digit) number you obtained from the same page as the program file on the ITC Software Licensing Website
    • Enter the 20 digit code, and click Next> If this step fails, please check to make sure that you do not have a space before the code, or any other hidden characters at the end of the code.
  19. If you are successful in obtaing a license, a page will tell you so. Click Finish
