SPSS Availability

Faculty and staff at the University of Virginia may access SPSS in three different ways: in the ITC Labs, on Unix workstations, or on your own machine.

Students (graduate or undergraduate) may access SPSS in two ways: in the ITC Labs on Unix workstations

Undergraduate and Graduate Students are NOT permitted to install SPSS on personal computers.

Students needing access to SPSS on a department machine must have a faculty or staff member license it on their behalf and take responsibility for meeting the terms of the site license. Questions or concerns regarding student access to SPSS should be directed to ITC Research Computing Support in the Scholar's Lab in Alderman Library (243-8800), or the Research Computing Lab in Brown SEL (243-8799), E-mail: res-consult@virginia.edu

In ITC Computer Labs

In all ITC computer labs, SPSS Version 15.0 is installed on Microsoft Windows machines and Version 16 is installed on Macintosh machines. For a list of all labs and locations, visit the ITC Labs and Classrooms webpage.

On a Unix workstation

The University of Virginia has a license for SPSS Version 6.1 on AIX and Solaris. Currently, SPSS 6.1.4 for AIX is available on the all ITC-maintained Unix/IBM RS-6000 computing systems as well as the Sun Workstations in the ITC UnixLab. To be able to use SPSS, you will need to have an account on one of these systems. You can obtain an account on blue.unix. on-line.

SPSS 6.1.4 for solaris is available on ITC maintained Suns. To run Solaris under CDE the file SPSS.default must be copied from /solaris/spss6/bin into the /usr/openwin/lib/app-defaults area as SPSS. You may also run SPSS from your IBM or Sun Unix workstation by mounting the /common tree from ITC unix server, jeeves.itc.virginia.edu. If you are mounting the /common tree from jeeves, the command "spss" will invoke SPSS.

On your own computer(s)

Faculty/Staff

If you are faculty or staff of the University AND have an office in Charlottesville where you work at least twice a week, you may obtain the site-licensed version of SPSS for home or office use. The site-licensed version may only be used while you are employed by UVa, for UVa-related work.

SPSS Version 15.0 for Windows: As of June 2006, SPSS 14 is available for download by staff and faculty from the licensing database, or by obtaining the disk from ITC Research Computing Support in the Scholars Lab in Alderman Library (243-8800), or the Research Computing Lab in Brown SEL (243-8799).

SPSS Versions 14.0 and earlier versions: We are no longer issuing updated authorization codes for these versions. If you are currently using one of these earlier versions, it is recommended that you uninstall your current version, and upgrade to SPSS 15 via download from the licensing website, or by obtaining the disk from us at either the Research Computing Lab in Brown SEL or from the Scholars Lab in Alderman Library.

Students

If you are a graduate or undergraduate student, you may purchase a copy of the Graduate Pack versions of SPSS. The Graduate Pack version is sold only to students, is their copy to keep, and may be taken with them when they leave the University. It is the full, complete version of SPSS and includes the Base, Regression and Advanced Models modules—all of which UVa has site licensed. A Student version is also available for purchase at Cavalier Computers. It is a scaled-back, limited-functionality version of SPSS Base, and it allows for some use of the Regression module. The Student version, for example, does not allow you to save syntax files or to submit syntax directly; pull-down menus must be used. Fewer options are available for some of the statistical procedures.

Other Users

Qualified individuals from the US and Canada can now download a semester rental version of the latest release of SPSS directly from e-academy's website. The rental price is $39.99 US for the base version and $69.99 for the SPSS Grad Pack. Students need a verifiable school e-mail address and a valid Mastercard(R) or Visa(R) in order to purchase retail products from e-academy's secure system. The rental version of SPSS from e-academy has an expiration date of either January 31 or August 31, depending on when you purchase. This means you can purchase a rental version of SPSS for just one semester at a time—the ideal solution if you don't want to invest money in software you're only using for one course. For more information about e-academy or to download and purchase the rental version of SPSS, please visit the e-academy website at: at http://www.e-academy.com/spss or call (877) 616-0662 (toll-free in the U.S. and Canada) or send e-mail to info@e-academy.com
