ITC Announcement/Security Enhanced for UVa Gmail Accounts

January 27, 2009

Starting January 27, UVa Gmail will start using a more secure https connection when sending and receiving email. This change requires no action on the part of UVa Gmail users, unless they are using any of the optional Google services listed below:

  • Gmail Notifier, an optional application that alerts you whenever you have new Gmail messages: Download a patch from Google at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=9429.
  • Gmail for Mobile, to access Gmail and other Google tools from your mobile phone or device: Upgrade if you have an older version, available from http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=100210.
  • Google Toolbar, which integrates into your Web browser and gives you quick access to Gmail and other Google tools: No fix currently available; you may experience problems with the "Send to" feature of the toolbar once the change is in place. Continue to check the Google Help pages for updates.

Google provides more information about how enabling https connections affects these optional Google services, at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=74765.

This move does not affect users who access their UVa Gmail account via Outlook or another email program.
