Configure Mac OS X (10.3) to Access the cavalier Wireless Network

Requirements

  • Mac OS X version 10.3 (Panther) with all current updates applied.
  • Make sure the time and date are correct on your computer.
  • An installed AirPort or AirPort Extreme wireless network card.
  • A University of Virginia account and password on Central Mail Service (CMS), ESERVICES, or Blue.unix.
  • Access to a wired network port at the University.

Connecting to the cavalier Encrypted Wireless Network

Prepare Your Computer

  1. Connect to the internet via your wired Ethernet connection.
  2. Ensure your computer is fully updated. Run Software Update found under the Apple Menu to update your operating system along with other system components - including AirPort software.

Get the Files You Will Need

  1. Download the Wireless Configuration Bundle to your desktop or your designated download folder.
  2. If it doesn't mount automatically, locate and double-click on the wirelessbundle.dmg file to mount the Wireless Bundle disk image. These files will be used later in the setup process.
  3. Download your Personal Digital Certificate by following instructions for Mac OS X on the personal digital certificates website.

Install Your Personal Certificate

  1. Locate the personal certificate file downloaded to your desktop or your designated download folder in the previous step (The file begins with your computing ID; e.g., mst3k-cert.p12.) Double-click the file.
  2. The Keychain Access application will open and you will be asked to add the certificate to a Keychain. Make sure you are adding it to the Keychain: login and click the OK button.

  3. You will then need to enter the same password you used when you obtained the certificate. You need to enter this password only once.
  4. After the import process is complete, you will see that five files have been added to your login Keychain:
    • Your Private Key
    • Your Personal Digital Certificate
    • USHER CA1 v1
    • UVa Standard Assurance USHER SKP 1
    • UVa USHER PKP CA 1

Install the Root Certificate

  1. From the Wireless Bundle disk image you mounted earlier, locate and double-click the usher-root.cer file. The Add Certificates window will appear to ask if you would like to add the certificate to the keychain.

  2. From the Keychain drop-down, select X509 Anchors.
  3. You will be asked to enter your password for your computer to proceed.
  4. Click the OK button to close the window.

Trust the CA Root Certificate

  1. Select the USHER CA1 v1 Certificate:

  2. Select the Trust Settings disclosure triangle to expand the section.
  3. Change the pop-up menu selection for Extensible Authentication (EAP) to Always Trust
  4. Quit Keychain Access.

Configure Your Wireless Connection Settings

  1. Locate thecavalier config.internetconnect file in the Wireless Bundle disk image you mounted earlier. Double click on the file. A window will appear. Do not fill in your username and password.

  2. Quit the Internet Connect application.

Connect to cavalier

To complete your wireless setup, you will need to be in an area which is covered by the cavalier wireless network. (wireless coverage at UVa)

  1. Disconnect your wired Ethernet connection.
  2. Click the AirPort menu bar icon Internet connection icon - airport turned on located in the top right of your screen. (If AirPort is off (i.e., Internet connection icon - airport turned off), select Turn AirPort On and then click the AirPort icon again.) From the drop-down menu, select cavalier

  3. When you connect to cavalier the first time you will need to complete an extra step:
    1. You will be asked to allow the use of your Private Key in the Apple Keychain application. Select Always Allow.

  4. When connecting you may see Authenticating scroll across the in the AirPort menu bar item as your wireless card negotiates with the wireless access point. Once you are connected, you will maintain an encrypted connection unless you do one of two things:
    • You move out of range of the cavalier wireless network
    • You turn off your AirPort card
  5. You can check the status of your connection by opening Internet Connect located under the AirPort menu bar icon and choosing Summary. This will confirm that you are connected using TLS encryption and also give the duration of your connection.

  6. Open a web browser. If you can reach sites on the Internet outside of the University of Virginia, registration is complete. If you are not registered, you will automatically connect to the Network Registration web site. Complete registration and reboot.
