Unsupported Device Access to the wahoo Wireless Network

Connecting to UVa’s Unencrypted Wireless Network

[Nov 23, 2009 10:11] Windows Live student email is currently unavailable. ITC is working with Microsoft to develop a solution.

This page contains generic setup information that should allow most wireless devices to connect to the UVa wahoo wireless network, which is unencrypted. Due to the large number of aftermarket cards and the difficulty of configuring some operating systems and non-laptop devices, we cannot guarantee a successful connection.

Requirements to Access the wahoo Wireless Network

  • Wi-Fi certified device
  • IMPORTANT: A wireless card that has been registered on the UVa network

ITC highly recommends that:

How to Configure Your Device to Access the wahoo Wireless Network

You will have to manually configure your device to access the unencrypted wahoo wireless network. Because the wahoo identifier is not broadcast, your device will not automatically discover that it is available. Use the following values to establish a connection:

wahoo Configuration Settings
Setting Value
Network Name or SSID wahoo (lowercase)
Network type Infrastructure or AP (not “ad hoc”)
Authentication None/open (but note requirement for network registration, above)
Encryption

None (no WEP or WPA; see security statement)

Consult your card manufacturer’s documentation for how to accomplish this. Beyond that, configuration options are the same for your wireless device that they would be for any wired network adapter.
