Windows 2000 Server Network Configuration Settings for the U.Va. Network

[Nov 23, 2009 14:09] Web access to Microsoft Live@edu accounts now works.

Following are answers to the network configuration questions that are asked by the wizards that run at the time of original installation. An X means the selection is checked; a blank means that it is not. Please note that if a blank appears in these instructions on an item that is checked as part of the default setup, you must change the default rather than simply leaving it in its default (checked) state! Installation notes are shown in italics. All other text is headings, prompts, or options as they appear on the screen.

Before beginning installation:

If your Windows 2000 server will not be running a Web server or other service that requires a DNS name, and it will only be accessed from your local subnet, then you may obtain an IP address using the DHCP protocol ("obtain automatically"). Otherwise you will need to obtain a static IP address and DNS host name from ITC. You can do so by going to domain name service.

Either un-check this, or if you need the service, make sure you have the appropriate security patch. See:

  Internet Information Services (IIS)
If you will not be running a Web server, then un-check this. If you are going to use IIS, you need the patch mentioned above.
Select any other services you need. Under "Networking Services," however, do not select "Domain Name System (DNS)" or "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)." These services are provided centrally by ITC.

You are now presented with a list of services that can be installed. These include:

You may receive an error message here indicating that the wizard cannot contact the DNS server for your domain. The last line of the message reads:
Confirm your DNS configuration, or install and configure a DNS server on this computer.
Just click past this message. Do not configure a DNS server on your computer.
Click OK.

You will now have a text file named netlogon.dns located in the directory \WINNT\system32\config\. If you are using a static IP address, then you can send this text file to hostmaster@virginia.edu. It contains the correct entries to make your Active Directory server accessible from anywhere on Grounds, and these will be added to the DNS tables.
File Server
Follow the wizard if you wish to set up shares at this time. If you are not using Active Directory, user accounts are configured through Computer Management under Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management.
