Configuration Instructions for Internet Explorer (v. 5 and higher)
Note: Although resources from the UVa library can be accessed successfully in Internet Explorer, IE may prove to be unreliable for some departmental resources.
- Start Internet Explorer.
- From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options, then the Connections tab.
- Note: IE 7 users, look for the gear-shaped icon on the far right of the browser window. IE 6 users, the menu is near the center at the top.
- Note: If you are using dial-up to access the Web, switch to the dial-up IE configuration instructions now.
- Click the LAN Settings button.
- In the LAN Settings window, check the Use automatic configuration script box.
- In the Address field, type http://proxy.virginia.edu/. (Include the trailing slash).
- Click OK to save your settings and close the LAN Settings window.
- Click OK again to save your changes and close the Internet Options window.
- Exit and restart Internet Explorer.
- Test your proxy connection to be sure it works. Note that this link only works when accessed from off Grounds. If you received a “Success” page, congratulations—you're done. If, on the other hand, you get a page with the message “An Error Has Occurred,” contact ITC's Help Desk.
Establish Your Identity with Proxy Server in Internet Explorer
The first time during any browser session that you attempt to connect to a restricted resource from off Grounds, you will be presented with an authentication window.
In the IE proxy authentication screen, enter your UVa computing ID (e.g., mst3k) in the User Name field, and then enter the password you created when you obtained your proxy server account. (If you forgot your proxy password, reset it by going to the proxy account creation page and re-creating your account.) Then, click OK. Now you can begin accessing UVa's restricted resources from anywhere.
Turn Off Proxy Server in Internet Explorer
If at some point you need to stop using the proxy server, simply perform the following steps:
- Return to step 3 above.
- In the LAN Settings window, delete http://proxy.virginia.edu/ from the Address field.
- Uncheck the Use automatic configuration script box.
- Click OK to close the LAN Settings window.
- Click OK again to save your changes and close the Internet Options window.
Dial-up IE Configuration Instructions
If you access the Web via dial-up, your Connections tab will include your dial-up services in the Dial-up Settings window. You need to separately configure each dial-up service that requires a proxy setting. If you ever add or change dial-up providers, you will need to return to these instructions and configure that dial-up service.
- For each dial-up service requiring a proxy server configuration, select its name so it is highlighted. Then click on the Settings button. The Settings window will appear.
- Check the Use automatic configuration script box.
- In the Address field, type http://proxy.virginia.edu/. (Include the trailing slash).
- Your user name and password field should be filled in with those appropriate your the dial-up service, not your UVa computing ID. If they are incorrect, don't change them in this window, change them in your dial-up networking folder.
- Click OK to close the Settings window.
- If you have set up the proxy for all of your needed dial-up services, click OK again to save your changes and close the Internet Options window.
- If you have additional dial-up services, configure each one by highlighting its name, clicking on the Settings button, and then repeating the steps above.
