In the past, the default configuration for ITC-supported FTP clients was to use passive mode. Unfortunately, our systems cannot detect this communication as FTP traffic, which has resulted in the following recommendations and guidelines for running FTP clients on the University network.

FTP with Internet Explorer vs. Netscape Browsers
We strongly recommend that you use Internet Explorer instead of Netscape browsers for downloading files from the Internet via FTP. Internet Explorer operates correctly with our systems, allowing us to monitor traffic congestion in a far more effective way. Please avoid downloading files via FTP with a Netscape client. Thanks for your cooperation!
Two options for complying with the new U.Va. ITC FTP Client Configuration
There are two ways you can support our efforts to better regulate network congestion. You can either download a new FTP client from Software Central, or you can re-configure your already installed FTP client, which takes minimal time.
-
Download a new FTP client with Passive mode already disabled
To download an FTP client that already has Passive mode disabled, you can go to Software Central
-
Reconfigure an already installed FTP client
For your convenience you can use a step-by-step guide for one of the three FTP clients supported by ITC: WS_FTP LE, AbsoluteFTP, or Secure FX. It takes an average of one minute or less to reconfigure your FTP client for this mode, and we appreciate your assistance in helping us to manage network traffic congestion. The guides can be accessed by clicking on the button with the FTP client of your choice below:
