UVa's Microsoft Contracts

Home and Virtual Machine Use Information

The Microsoft Campus Agreement at UVa licenses several of the most commonly-used Microsoft products for:

  • Full- and part-time faculty and staff employed in Agency 207 (mostly state-funded academic and administrative units) and
  • Students (except those in Continuing Education)

Home Use

Under the Campus Agreement's "Work at Home" provision, one copy of Microsoft Office for Windows and Mac may be installed on a personally-owned home computer or second laptop used by faculty/staff for UVa-related work on that machine. (Note that operating system software, such as Microsoft Vista, is not available for work-at-home use.)

To take advantage of "Work at Home:"

  • The "Work at Home" copy must be removed from your home computer when you leave the University.
  • You must purchase the Office CD set for $10 (by arrangement with your department, you may use a PTAO as well) and complete the work-at-home agreement at Cavalier Computers in the UVa Bookstore.

If you do not conduct University business at home, but would like software for personal use, Cavalier Computers sells discounted software to faculty and staff.

Virtual Machines Use

The Campus Agreement also covers virtual machines. Only one virtual machine may be run on a Mac running Bootcamp, Parallels or VMWare Fusion. Up to four virtual machines can be operated on a computer that either:

  • Had Windows installed at the manufacturer,
  • Had a full retail version of Windows installed by you, or
  • Is running Linux, provided that computer came with Windows installed by the manufacturer.
