Identity Management & Permanent Passwords

The Process for New UVa Students

[Nov 23, 2009 10:11] Windows Live student email is currently unavailable. ITC is working with Microsoft to develop a solution.

Phase I: Your Temporary Applicant Password

Limited Access for Applicants & Newly-Admitted Students

When you’re an applicant and are newly-accepted to UVa, your access to UVa systems and resources is limited—for example, you cannot yet access the UVa wireless network. At this point, you have only:

  • Your UVa computing ID (which contain your initials, a numeral, and one or two letters, such as mst3k), which will eventually serve as your login to many University accounts and becomes the first part of your University email address;
  • Your Student System ID number (which was sent to the email address you used on your UVa application for admission) and is a 7-digit number assigned to you; and
  • A temporary applicant password on the Student Information System (SIS), which you got from the UVa Applicant/Temporary Password Request page.

After you’re accepted to UVa, you use your temporary password to log in through NetBadge to complete the following steps:

  1. Take the Responsible Computing Tutorial & Quiz and agree to abide by the University’s computing policies.
  2. Choose your University student email vendor—either UVa Gmail or UVa Microsoft Windows Live.
  3. Begin checking your UVa email account by going to www.mail.virginia.edu.
  4. Register for Summer Orientation.

Retrieving Lost Temporary Passwords

At any point, if you forget your password during this phase, you may get a new one by simply going to the UVa Applicant/Temporary Password Request page.

Phase II: Your Permanent UVa Password

Full Access for New Students after Summer Orientation & Beyond

As a full-fledged UVa student, you will use your permanent UVa password for many things, including to:

  • access UVa’s wireless network;
  • check your UVa email account;
  • register for courses through the SIS;
  • log onto public computers; and
  • view course syllabi, assignments, etc. online via UVaCollab.

How to Obtain Your Permanent Password

(This assumes you have already completed all the steps listed above in Phase I.)

  1. Show a passport or U.S. government-issued photo ID as part of your in-person identity proofing. Most students do this at Summer Orientation. (If for some reason you did not, go to the University ID Card Office to get one.)
  2. Pick up your University ID and receive a PassPhrase card—a small, white card with the URL on it and a special code just for you. Again, most students completed this step at Summer Orientation.
  3. On your computer, open a Web browser and go to the website listed on your PassPhrase card. You will have to log into the site through NetBadge, using your temporary applicant password one last time. (Forgotten your temporary password?)
  4. While on the website listed on your PassPhrase card (http://whois.virginia.edu/idm), set up:
    • Your 4 personal security questions and answers; and
    • Your permanent UVa NetBadge password.
  5. Do not destroy your PassPhrase card until you are sure you will remember your new, permanent password.

Once you set your security questions and permanent password, within 15 minutes your other ITC computing accounts are now created: Eservices and blue.unix.'

Retrieving Lost Permanent Passwords

At any point, if you forget your permanent NetBadge password, you may get a new one, depending upon whether you still have your white PassPhrase card:

  • If you still have your PassPhrase card: You may return to the website listed on your PassPhrase card and go through the process to set your security questions and your new permanent password again. You will have to log into the site through NetBadge, using your temporary applicant password one last time. (Forgotten your temporary password?)
  • If you no longer have your PassPhrase card: You will need to start the process all over again. You will have to redo your in-person identity proofing and obtain a new white PassPhrase card, which you will use to set your security questions and your new permanent password again. This is for your own protection and security.

Setting Your Permanent Password & Getting on a UVa Wireless Network

Remaining on Grounds?

If you’re staying on Grounds after you complete your in-person identity proofing and receive your PassPhrase card, your access to UVa resources (including the UVa wireless network) is limited until you complete the process and set your security questions and permanent password.

To finish your identity proofing process and gain full access to the UVa wireless network:

  1. Connect to the Welcome_to_UVa_Wireless network. (Need help?)
  2. Open a Web browser. You’ll be automatically directed to a webpage to set up your wireless access for the first time, but do NOT click the Continue button yet. Instead, type the URL on your PassPhrase card: http://whois.virginia.edu/idm.
    • You will not be able to successfully set up wireless until you have first done this. You may return to wireless setup afterwards.
  3. At http://whois.virginia.edu/idm, set your personal security questions and answers and your permanent password.
    • Do not destroy your PassPhrase card until you are sure you will remember your new, permanent password.
  4. Close your Web browser. You may need to wait up to 15 minutes before proceeding to set up your access to the UVa wireless network for the first time.
  5. Re-open your Web browser. You will be auto-directed to the first-time wireless setup page again.
  6. Now that you have your permanent password, you may now click the Continue button for Faculty, Staff, and Students to download and run the Network Setup Tool. This Tool will configure your computer to access the UVa wireless network.
  7. In the installation process, you will be prompted to provide information. When asked for a password, provide your new, permanent password.

If you encounter problems getting on the UVa wireless network or using your permanent password, contact the UVa Help Desk.

Going off-Grounds?

If you’re going off-Grounds after you do in-person identity proofing and receive your PassPhase card, you can go online anywhere to access the website listed on your white PassPhrase card and set your security questions and permanent password.

Do not destroy your PassPhrase card until you are sure you will remember your new, permanent password.

Once you are on Grounds, and are setting up your access to the UVa wireless network for the first time:

  1. Connect to the Welcome_to_UVa_Wireless network. (Need help?)
  2. Download and run the Network Setup Tool as described. This Tool will configure your computer to access the UVa wireless network.
  3. In the installation process, you will be prompted to provide information. When asked for a password, provide your new, permanent password.

If you encounter problems getting on the UVa wireless network or using your permanent password, contact the UVa Help Desk.
