About “Enhanced” NetBadge

How Is Enhanced NetBadge Different?

You’re already familiar with NetBadge—you probably log into it often, as it protects many UVa websites and services, including your email. “Enhanced” NetBadge is a higher-security edition of NetBadge that will look slightly different from the “original” NetBadge and increase protection of your sensitive personal data.

The enhanced version of NetBadge will ask you to supply:

When Will I Use Enhanced NetBadge?

You’ll use your personal security questions and Enhanced NetBadge whenever you access certain University computer systems which require a higher level of security. For example, you’ll use it later this academic year when you access the Student Information System (SIS), and when logging into Employee Self-Service on the Oracle ERP/Integrated System.

In the future, even more University systems which contain sensitive data and require a higher level of identity assurance than username and password alone will likely be protected behind Enhanced NetBadge.

What Do I Need to Do Now to Get Ready?

How to Complete Your ID Verification

  1. Take your UVa ID card and either a U.S. government-issued photo ID, US Driver's License or any government-issued passport with you when you go to an ID Verification Clinic location.

  2. When you show your UVa and government-issued photo IDs, you receive a slip of paper with a “PassPhrase” on it, and instructions to visit a URL (http://whois.virginia.edu/idm). Go to this website and enter your PassPhrase, along with your University ID number and other identifying information.

  3. Then set up your 4 personal security questions and answers. Please take your time and think carefully as you select these. Be sure to pick questions for which you easily know the answer, but other persons do not.

If You Do Not Complete Your ID Verification...

Why ID Proofing Is Important

For the past several years, UVa has made a concerted, multi-year effort to reduce reliance on Social Security numbers (SSNs), better protecting the sensitive data of students, faculty, and staff.

If you do not complete your ID verification process, anytime you log into a system behind the enhanced version of NetBadge, you will have to provide your SSN as your personal security question.

ID proofing essentially helps UVa validate your identity without using your SSN, strengthening the protection of your sensitive personal data. So, please help us protect your personal data and minimize the use of SSNs by setting other security questions for yourself as soon as possible! Current state law requires that we stop using Social Security numbers for this purpose by June 30, 2010, so don’t wait.

Special Note: Currently Away from Grounds?

If you received an email from ITC directing you to this page, but you are currently away from Grounds and are unable to go in person to complete your ID verification:

  1. Please reply to the email you receive and let ITC know when you will be back on Grounds.
  2. If you are unable to come on one of the above dates for ID Clinics, another option is to schedule an appointment with the ITC Accounts Office to have the verification completed there.

ITC encourages you do this as quickly as possible after you return to UVa to ensure uninterrupted access to systems protected by Enhanced NetBadge.
