Costs & Policies for UVa’s Exchange Service on a Mobile Device

The following costs and policies are associated with accessing the UVa Exchange Service on your mobile device or smartphone.

BlackBerry Devices

BlackBerrys connect to Exchange using either BES (the BlackBerry Enterprise Server), a for-fee service; or BIS (Blackberry Internet Service), a no-fee service which uses ActiveSync.

Other Mobile Devices

Other mobile devices connect to Exchange using ActiveSync, which is a no-fee service.

  • Timeout PINs required: ITC requires that a simple 4-character personal identification number (PIN) be created for your device. If your device is not used for 60 minutes, you will be required to re-enter your PIN to place an outgoing call or use a Bluetooth device. You will be prompted to create this PIN the first time your device synchs with Exchange.
  • Synchronization: Devices using ActiveSync may not synch all Exchange services wirelessly; some services may need to be synchronized using a cradle and a program like HotSync®.
  • Lost devices: If you lose your device, you must remotely wipe your device using Outlook Web Access (OWA).
  • Minutes used: For all devices, synchronizing with the Exchange server requires time and will affect the number of minutes you use each month. Some have found that the increases to their service bill have been non-trivial.
