Configure Windows Vista Outlook 2007

More information about UVa's move to Microsoft Exchange.
Information on how to configure Outlook 2007 on a Windows Vista computer for use with the UVa centralized Exchange server.
If you are off-Grounds, you must have a connection through UVa Anywhere to do the following. You will need to know your Eservices/Exchange password, and have a UVa centralized Exchange account to be able to use Outlook 2007 on the UVa centralized Exchange server.

Windows Vista Outlook 2007 Configuration Information

  1. Verify that Outlook 2007 is installed on your computer.
    1. Click the Windows Start button.
    2. Click All Programs.
    3. Click Microsoft Office.
    4. Click Microsoft Office Outlook 2007.
    5. If asked to install, click Yes to install.
      If you are not asked to install, but the program starts, click the Cancel button.
    6. On the Outlook 2007 Startup window, click the Cancel button.
    7. When asked if you want to quit the wizard, click the Yes button.
  2. If you have Outlook 2007 open to another email server, close it.
  3. Close all connections you have to the Exchange server (e.g., through the Outlook Web interface (OWA), another email program, etc.).
  4. Click the Windows Start button.
  5. From the popup window, select Control Panel.
  6. Click User Accounts.
  7. Double-click the Windows Control Panel Mail Icon icon.
  8. Click the Show Profiles button.
  9. On the General tab, click the Add button.
  10. Within the New Profile window, in the Profile Name: field, type your UVa computing ID (example: mst3k).
  11. Click the OK button.
  12. Select the box beside Manually configure server settings or additional server types.
  13. Click the Next> button.
  14. Select the Microsoft Exchange radio button.
  15. Click the Next> button.
  16. In the Microsoft Exchange Server: field, type columbo.eservices.virginia.edu.
  17. Check the box beside Use Cached Exchange Mode.
  18. In the User Name: field, type your UVa computing ID (example: mst3k).
  19. Click the More Settings… button.
  20. If you see a Connect to columbo.eservices.virginia.edu window, you are not connected to the eservices domain. To connect to the server:
    • In the User name: field, type your UVa Computing ID using the form: eservices\Your UVa Computing ID. For example: eservices\mst3k
    • In the Password: field, type your UVa centralized Exchange server/Eservices password.
  21. Click the OK button.
  22. Click the Security tab.
  23. If needed, check the box beside Encrypt data between Microsoft Office Outlook and Microsoft Exchange Server.
  24. If needed, click the Apply button.
  25. Click the OK button.
  26. Click the Next> button.
  27. Click the Finish button.
  28. In the Mail window:
    • If you will be using only this one account, select the Always Use This Profile radio button and check the drop down window to ensure it contains the name of your profile.
    • If you will use multiple email accounts, select the Prompt for a profile to be used radio button.
  29. Click the Apply button.
  30. Click the OK button.
  31. Close the Control Panel > User Accounts window.
  32. Verify that you are configured to use your server Inbox:
    1. Start Outlook 2007.
      • Click the Windows Start button.
      • Click All Programs.
      • Click Microsoft Office.
      • Click Microsoft Office Outlook 2007.
    2. If needed, from the User name: drop-down, select your account.
      Example: eservices\mst3k
    3. In the Password: field, type your UVa centralized Exchange server/Eservices password.
    4. Click the OK button.
    • Should pop-up windows appear, respond as appropriate:
      • Microsoft Office Outlook window asking if Outlook should be default email program:
        • You can stop this Microsoft Office Outlook window from reappearing by clearing the Always perform this check when starting Microsoft Office Outlook box.
        • Click the Yes or No button.
      • Microsoft Office Outlook window asking about RSS Feeds:
        • Click the Yes, No or Remind Me Later button. This button will reappear until you choose Yes or No.
    • From the Tools drop-down menu, choose Account Settings…
    • Select your profile for the UVa centralized Exchange server.
    • Beneath Selected e-mail account delivers new e-mail messages to the following folder:
      • If you see an entry similar to Mailbox - LastName, FirstName (initials)\Inbox,
        Example: Mailbox - Theatre, Mystery (mst3k)\Inbox
        then server delivery is enabled, nothing further needs to be done, and you can click the Cancel button.
      • If you see an entry similar to: Personal Folders, then local delivery is enabled, and you will want to Change to Server Delivery.
    • Click the Close button.
    • Exit and re-start Outlook.
