Answers to FAQs
- What do all of those icons mean? Is there a way I can see text links instead of icons?
- For a full listing of icons and their meanings, see the icon glossary. If you prefer a simpler interface that downloads faster but has fewer options, you can change the interface setting to text display.
- Why did I get logged out while composing a long message? I lost everything I wrote!
- If CMS WebMail detects no activity for 59 minutes, it automatically logs you out. “Activity” includes:
- clicking anywhere in the CMS WebMail interface;
- sending or receiving messages;
- opening or closing folders (mailboxes); or
- accessing your address book.
Note that keyboard stokes are not interpreted by the server as “activity.” The server cannnot detect when you are typing, so if you are composing a long message and do not save it as a draft periodically, the server won't know you are working, and will log you out automatically, causing you to lose your work.
This auto-logout is for everyone's safety, to protect people's email accounts from misuse when they forget to log out on publicly accessible computers. To avoid losing content when composing long messages, we recommend that you save a draft every few minutes, or monitor your time remaining and click the Reset button if you need additional time.
- How do I delete a folder (mailbox)?
- See Working with Mailboxes.
- How do I save a copy of sent messages?
- CMS WebMail allows you to change your settings so that a copy of sent messages gets saved automatically.
- How do I change the sort order of the messages in my inbox?
- By default, message appear in your Inbox sorted from the most recently received to oldest received. To change the sort order or select other options for sorting such as From: address, Subject, or Size, see the instructions for changing your mailbox display options.
- Is it possible to create group addresses in the CMS WebMail address book?
- Yes, see CMS WebMail Address Book documentation for more information.
- How do I “bounce” or “redirect” a message that includes full headers? How do I display the full headers of a message?
- You may get a request from the UVa postmaster to “redirect” or “bounce” a message that includes full headers, when you are having a problem with your mail. Or, you may want to redirect suspicious messages (such as phishing scams) including full headers to alert University officials of a possible scam circulating in the UVa community. You can also view the full headers of a message yourself, without redirecting it.
- Can I filter email from specific senders or email that meets certain criteria?
- Yes, server side filters are available.
- Can I control spam email in WebMail?
- Spam tagging/spam filtering is done on the system level; setting a spam filter within WebMail is a vestige of an antispam system that is no longer in use, and should be ignored. Making changes to these settings has no effect on your email.
- Can I use an email program instead of CMS WebMail? How do I configure that?
- You can use other email programs such as Thunderbird, Mail for Macintosh or Outlook to access your Central Mail Service (CMS) account on your computer, rather than CMS WebMail. To use those applications, you must configure them properly using the settings unique to your account. CMS WebMail provides this information for you on its Settings tab (see Client Settings). ITC recommends IMAP configurations (found under Other Clients).
- Is it possible to move messages to my local hard drive using CMS WebMail?
- Storing email on your local computer poses security problems if someone else gains access to your computer and means that unless there is a routine backup for your computer, if your computer crashes you will lose what you have stored. If you must store messages on your local computer, you will need to use a full-featured email program such as Thunderbird, Mail for Macintosh or Outlook configured to use an IMAP connection to move messages from your CMS server account to your local computer for storage. Remember to have regular backups of your system and to encrypt sensitive data.
