Publishing your Web pages with Home Directory Service

What is Home Directory Service?

Home Directory Service is a software utility that you may use with Windows 95 or Windows 98 (stay tuned for updates on compatibility with Windows 2000). Basically, in order for you to publish your Web files, you will need to upload them from your local computer to a server. Home Directory Service provides a connection from your computer to the server via a Drive Mapping. After you have established a Drive Mapping, you may simply save your files to the drive letter assigned (if that was clear as mud, don't worry -- the specific steps of how to do this are outlined below).

Downloading and installing Home Directory Service

You may download Home Directory Service from ITC's Software Central site at the following URL:

http://www.itc.virginia.edu/central/homedir.html

You will need to install the program by following the configuration instructions outlined at the site mentioned above.

Connecting to Home Directory Service

Note: The following steps outline how to use Home Directory Service to publish personal Web pages to www.people. If you would like to find out more about using Home Directory Service for departmental Web publishing, please visit: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/homedir.

After you have installed and configured Home Directory Service, you simply need to start the program by double-clicking on the Home Directory Service icon. A dialog box similar to the following will open. You will need to supply the password for your blue.unix account and then click Connect (Note: this may not be the same password you use to read your email. If you have questions, you should call the ITC Help Desk at 924-3731). Note the "Drive Letter to Use" field near the bottom of the dialog box (by default it will be "J").

Saving your files

Now you may use Home Directory Service to publish your Web files. You simply need to copy the files on your local computer to the public_html directory of your "J" drive (or whatever letter you specified in the "Drive Letter to Use" field - see picture above). You may then view your Web files by surfing to the following URL:

http://www.people.virginia.edu/~mst3k/filename.html

where mst3k is your computing ID, and filename.html is the name of the file you published.
