Configuring Dreamweaver for Secure FTP Connections
Reducing the threat of a computer account compromise resulting in security breaches to systems at U.Va. is an ongoing challenge. Establishing a secure connection from one machine to another is one way to reduce this threat. All versions of Dreamweaver can be set up to make remote connections secure. Dreamweaver MX 2004 can be configured to use Secure FTP (SFTP). For prior versions you must configure the application to use SSH tunneling for remote connections.
In Windows, SecureCRT with port-forwarding can be used to create the necessary tunnel. Forward a chosen port to the server and refer to that port in the site definition within Dreamweaver. As long as SecureCRT runs in the background, the tunnel is available.
The following links to Macromedia's web site provide information and steps needed to set up secure FTP configuration options in versions of Dreamweaver prior to the MX 2004 edition.
An alternative secure FTP application for the PC that employs the SSH2 protocol is SecureFX.
