Comparison of Web Editors

Comments: Great features, easy to use, difficult to accomplish some tasks.

Comments: Free, pretty easy to use, buggy.

  • Provides advanced features for power users
  • Search and replace works in HTML source
  • Graphical editor for image maps
  • Writes clean code and able to clean up extraneous code produced in other editors
  • Customizable
  • Best for cross-browser compatibility
  • Many bugs found in version 2 have been fixed
  • Workshops and support offered through ITC

Pros

  • Site management tools
  • Templates & Library items
  • Provides advanced features for power users
  • Search and replace works in HTML source
  • Graphical editor for image maps

Pros

  • Built in to Netscape Communicator (free!)
  • Can use plug-ins for added functionality
  • Remembers all the UNIX paths you have published to and allows you to select them from a drop-down menu

Cons

  • Requires 32 - 40 MB of RAM
  • May be difficult to learn?

Cons

  • Mac version rates poorly
  • Adds lots of unnecessary code
  • Tends to write Internet Explorer-specific code
  • No proportional font sizes (except in HTML source)
  • Difficut to use multi-platform font definitions
  • Many features not available on UNIX servers at U.Va.

Cons

  • Doesn't offer site management
  • Screen flickers when typing in tables
  • No forms support
  • Inserts unnecessary code
