List Owner Duties and Responsibilities

bounce

Tend to Pending Moderator Requests

digest

If a list member turns digesting on, list messages are sent to that member bundled together (usually once per day), instead of as separate email when the message arrives at the list.

discard

It is possible to configure a list to discard messages that fit certain criteria. Discarded messages are not posted to the list. No notification of this action is sent to the sender.

Tend to Pending Moderator Requests

explicit destination

By default, the listname must appear in the to: or cc: field of messages. If it does not, a hold will be placed on the message in an attempt to catch spam.

List Configuration Initial Options

hold

List postings can be held for administrator or moderator approval to cut down on unwanted messages to list members. Large attachments, no explicit destination, and too many recipients are just some of the reasons messages may be held.

Tend to Pending Moderator Requests

implicit destination

Messages can be held because the list address appears only in the Bcc: field of the message or the message was sent to a list of which your list is a member. (See explicit destination, below).

Administrator FAQs

member

An email address that is a member of the list, has a password, and uses a URL like:

https://list.mail.virginia.edu/mailman/options/list_name/
email_address_as_it_appears_on_list

Moderation Options

Available List Member Options

nomail

Members for whom messages are bouncing will first have their list membership set to nomail, which stops delivery of list postings to the member until the nomail setting is removed by the member or administrator. If the nomail setting is not removed and messages continue to bounce, the member will eventually be automatically unsubscribed.

Bounce Processing

non-digest

With the digest option off (the default), members receive each message to the list as a separate email when the message arrives at the list.

Member: List Subscription Options

Administrator: List Administration Digest Options

non-member

An email address that is not a member of the list, has no password, and uses a URL like:

http://list.mail.virginia.edu/mailman/listinfo/list_name

not metoo

Available List Member Options

owner

See definition for administrator.

regular expression

A pattern which will match certain text. Regular expressions are helpful with the UVa mail system since addresses can appear in many forms, such as mst3k@virginia.edu, mst3k@m.mail.virginia.edu, etc. The following regular expression, when entered as a non-member sender for a moderated Mailman list, would allow mst3k's posts to be accepted by the list without administrator approval:

^mst3k@.*virginia.edu

Selective Moderation Options

reject

It is possible to configure a list to reject messages that fit certain criteria. Rejected messages are returned to the sender with a message explaining why they were rejected, and are not posted to the list.

Tend to Pending Moderator Requests

umbrella list

A list intended to cascade only to other mailing lists, e.g., a list made up only of other lists.
