Important Notices
- Work by Siemens the week of March 16 should have dramatically improved voice quality and the delay problems experienced by some users. If you continue to have problems with either, please contact the Voicemail Help Desk at (434) 924-4183.
- Telephone Message Waiting Lights
If you are having problems with your message waiting light, please report this to the Voicemail Help Desk at (434) 924-4183. - Forwarding your phone to Xpressions and PhoneMail
We have had reports of people accidently forwarding their phones to PhoneMail instead of Xpressions. Please remember that if you forward your phone to voicemail, you must use the new Xpressions number, 3-0095, and not the old PhoneMail number. Note: if you have accidently forwarded your line to PhoneMail since the Dec. 19 cutover to Xpressions, remember to call into PhoneMail and retrieve your messages there, too. If you have programmed a button on your phone that automatically forwards your line to voicemail, remember to reprogram the button to forward to Xpressions instead.
Introducing the Xpressions Voicemail System
The PhoneMail voice messaging system is being replaced for faculty and staff with Xpressions, a newer Siemens voicemail product that is based on standard computer system technology. Students will continue to use PhoneMail in the residence halls.
Use of Xpressions will begin early on the morning of Wednesday, December 19, 2007. At that time, your new voicemail will be delivered to your Xpressions mailbox.
While Xpressions offers improved reliability, you will still hear most of the familiar PhoneMail prompts and use most of the same key press sequences when you work with the new system to process your voice messages. The transition from PhoneMail to Xpressions will be simple for most faculty and staff, typically involving just a day or two of actually listening to the system's voice prompts again instead of immediately pressing memorized key sequences.
And, you'll still hear the same familiar PhoneMail Lady!
Moving from PhoneMail to Xpressions Voicemail
If you did not register on or before December 18, 2007, for Xpressions, you will log into Xpressions on the first day of Xpressions service - December 19 - using the system-wide default PIN (5551212) that will be left as a message in your old PhoneMail box.
Starting December 19:
- Check your old PhoneMail box for any unheard messages. Use your old access number and password.
- Dial 47000, the Xpressions access number.
- Enter your extension and #, or simply # if you are at that extension.
- Enter your Password (PIN) and #. Use the default password (5551212) if you have not registered.
- Change your password and record your name, if directed to so by Xpressions. ITC requests that you postpone recording your greetings until later in the day on December 19. The Xpressions system has plenty of capacity for its normal UVa workload but would likely become overloaded if everyone at the University attempted to change his or her greetings on Wednesday morning.
- Re-program your Phonemail (MSGWT) button on your phone to access Xpressions
- On a ROLM Phone:
- Pick up handset
- Dial ##30 47000 (No confirmation will be heard)
- Hang up.
- Test the PhoneMail/MSGWT button. You should hear "Welcome to HiPath Xpressions".
- On a ROLM Phone:
- Review and delete your old PhoneMail messages in preparation for later shutdown of PhoneMail.
- If you encounter problems, please call the Voicemail Help Desk, at 924-4183.
The tentative retirement date for PhoneMail use by UVa faculty and staff is February 1, 2008. Student use in the residence halls will continue.
Please note: there is no practical way for us to extract your existing recorded messages or greetings from PhoneMail and migrate them into Xpressions. On the day of the system cutover, Xpressions will start to answer your phone using the greetings that you have previously recorded and you will call into Xpressions to retrieve your new messages. PhoneMail will remain online for a couple of weeks to give you an opportunity to listen to your last few new messages and/or transcribe any saved messages that you want to retain.
More information about Xpressions can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and the User Guide. You may also call the Voicemail Help Desk at (434)924-4183.
