Telephone Services at UVa

Getting Service

Students will find a phone in their on-Grounds residence hall rooms; faculty and staff will normally get telephone services through their departments.

Phone Service for Students in the Residence Halls

A telephone is already connected to the only active telephone jack in student rooms in the on-Grounds' residence halls. The telephone should not be removed from its current connection in the wall. Local service fees are included in the Housing fee; long distance service is an additional charge.

Residence hall telephones are equipped with PhoneMail, a voice message mailbox shared between roommates. Access to PhoneMail is password protected for privacy. Training materials for using PhoneMail, as well as the initial PhoneMail password, are located beside the telephone in dorm rooms. A ROLMphone User's Guide and dialing instructions are also provided. More information about PhoneMail is available in the "Voicemail Options" section of this website.

The telephone lines installed in University residence halls support digital telephone instruments, and not analog phones like those used in most homes and elsewhere. ITC's digital lines allow us to offer more and better telephony services, but they are not compatible with standard telephones or accessories. Answering machines, modems, and facsimile (FAX) equipment will not work in residence hall rooms. In the extremely rare event that a student's needs cannot be met through the Ethernet data network, students can rent an analog adapter or pay to have a new analog line installed. For more information on analog services and prices, please contact the ITC Communication Services Student Customer Service representative at (434) 924-6879.

Phone Service for Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff in University offices should arrange for telephone service and repair with either a departmental contact person or a telephone counselor (see the list at http://www.itc.virginia.edu/commserv/counselors.html). Otherwise, contact ITC Communication Services, located in Carruthers Hall, via messenger mail to ITC Communication Services, P.O. Box 400196, or by calling (434)924-4148. (More information for departments - like filling out a TSR (Telephone Service Request) - is available in the Managing Telephone Services in a Department section of this website.)

Faculty and staff who reside in housing provided by or through the University should contact the Housing department to determine what arrangements need to be made for telephone service in these residences; telephone service fees are not normally included in these rentals.
