Cellular Phone Service

Students

Students needing wireless and cellular telephone service can contract independently with any of the large number of nation- and statewide providers (like Alltel, AT&T, Verizon, etc.) either in Charlottesville or their hometown. The University does not have a preferred cellular telephone service carrier for students.

Faculty and Staff

Wireless and cellular telephone service needs of faculty and staff can be met in a variety of ways; learn about all of our state-provided "contract" cellular phone plans. (Please see below for information on the new Apple 3G iPhones.)

The University of Virginia is required by the State of Virginia to purchase cellular services from supplier contracts designated by the state as "mandatory," with exception to the Medical Center.

Upon selecting a plan and equipment, please email your request to Joy Nowell at jec6b@virginia.edu. Once received, your order will be processed to VITA.

ITC Communication Services has researched the process to request exemptions from the VITA cellular telephone contract. Departments that believe that the cost of their existing cellular service is lower than what is available on the state contract should contact Communication Services (Judy Lynch, jkl@virginia.edu, Manager).

Communication Services will process appeals to utilize alternate vendors as long as departments provide specific cost data and/or strong justifications for why they need to remain with a different carrier.

Note: You will receive the detailed listing of the calls that you place approximately 90 days after the call is dialed. This delay is due to the vendor's billing cycle, the time that it takes for the state to process the data, and then ITC Communication Services billing cycle.

New Apple 3G iPhone Information

ITC is now taking orders for the new 3G iPhone; however, VITA has informed us of a delay in fulfilling those orders. They have not yet advised us of when deliveries will begin. Please contact Joy Nowell at jec6b@virginia.edu to place your Apple 3G iPhone order.

Pricing is expected to be as follows:

  • Apple 3G iPhone: 8GB - $199
  • Apple 3G iPhone: 16GB - $299

Please note: You must purchase both data and voice service for the new Apple 3G iPhone.
