Mission

The ITC-Academic Computing Health Sciences (ITC-ACHS) computing facility is a collaborative effort between Information Technology and Communication (ITC) and the School of Medicine. This facility was formed to make computing support more directly accessible to the health sciences community. The initiative is jointly funded and directed by both organizations. ITC-ACHS supports specialized biomedical research applications in health informatics, biostatistics, data visualization, molecular modeling, molecular biology and image processing.

Management

The Directors of ITC-ACHS are Dr. William R. Pearson of the Department of Biochemistry and Terry Lockard, Director of ITC's Computing Support Services. The Site Manager is Tom Spraggins of ITC. ITC-ACHS also has an Advisory Committee composed of faculty representatives from the various health science areas we serve. The advisory committee aids in defining and establishing policies which govern the use of the ITC-ACHS facility and its personnel. The advisory committee generally meets once a month. A list of the current committee members is available online. The ITC-ACHS Advisory Committee can be contacted via email to achs-ac@virginia.edu.

Faculty and Staff

ITC-ACHS staff offer a broad range of expertise ranging from technical consulting for the applications and hardware supported by ITC-ACHS to specialized consulting in areas such as molecular biology, health informatics, and data visualization.

Labs and Conference Room

ITC-ACHS houses public computing laboratories for medical research and a teaching lab facility.

  • The Multimedia Lab provides microcomputer-based hardware and software for capturing video, film, 35mm slides and print images.
  • The Data Acquisition Lab provides hardware and software for acquiring, displaying, and analyzing image data (auto radiograms, X-ray films, and microscope images). A 35 mm film recorder is available for printing Powerpoint to slides. Two high-performance Silicon Graphics workstations and software for molecular modeling and data visualization are also available in this lab.
  • The Teaching Lab provides computer classroom access and overflow lab space for image editing and printing.
  • The ITC-ACHS conference room comfortably seats twenty people and has ethernet, modem, and cable connection and an overhead projection system.

Reserving Equipment and Rooms

  • Reservations are limited to 4 hour intervals, up to a total of 8 hours per week. Reservations must be made online using Collab.
