Lost Passwords/Changing Passwords

Password Recovery Wizard

Answer the following questions to quickly determine how to go about resetting your password.

  1. Are you a student?
    • If yes, you’re a current student - Are you taking classes through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS)?
      • If yes, through SCPS - Go directly to the SCPS website to reset or obtain your permanent password.
      • If no, you’re any other type of student - Proceed to Question #2.
    • If no, you’re not primarily a student; you’re an employee - Did you change your originally-assigned password? (You were initially given the same password for your 3 major computing accounts.)
      • If yes, you changed it and have since forgotten it - Follow instructions below to reset your password on:
        • UVa’s Central Mail Service (used for CMS WebMail);
        • Eservices (used for UVa Exchange Service, logging into public computers, networked printing, etc.); or
        • blue.unix (used for logging into UNIX clusters, research computing clusters, and for posting to other UVa websites).
Or, if you need to change another password, view the entire list of computing accounts and select the name of the account password you need to reset.
      • If no, you didn’t change it - Retrieve it by simply returning to the Responsible Computing Quiz.
    • If no, you’re not yet a student, but are an applicant for admission to UVa or a newly-admitted student who has not yet begun classes - Go to the UVa Applicant/Temporary Password Request page to get a temporary password.
  2. Did you begin taking classes at UVa for the first time beginning in Fall 2009 or later?
    • If yes, you began in Fall 2009 - Proceed to Question #3.
    • If no, you began in any other term, including Summer 2009 - Did you change your originally-assigned password?
  3. Do you have a password that will get you through NetBadge to at least one UVa service?
  4. Do you (still) have your white PassPhrase card?
    • If yes, you (still) have your PassPhrase card -
      1. Go to the website listed on it (http://whois.virginia.edu/idm) and log in using your existing NetBadge password (for new students, this must be your temporary applicant password).
      2. (Re)set your personal security questions and answers.
      3. After you do this, you will have a chance to (re)set your permanent password.
    • If no, you no longer have your PassPhrase card, or never obtained it -
      1. Then you must (re)do your in-person identity proofing to get (another) one.
      2. Once you have a PassPhrase card, go to the website listed on it (http://whois.virginia.edu/idm) and log in using your existing NetBadge password (for new students, this must be your temporary applicant password).
      3. (Re)set your personal security questions and answers.
      4. After you do this, you will have a chance to (re)set your permanent password.
